The beginnings

Heupel was born and grew up in the South Dakota town of Aberdeen. Cindy was the head of his high school, and Ken was the head football coach at Northern State University. Heupel’s father took him to see game movies when he was a child.

He went to school in Aberdeen at Central High School, where he played football for the Central Golden Eagles. In 1994, during the second half of the first game of his sophomore year, he took over as quarterback for the Golden Eagles in a smaller version of the run-and-shoot offense. As a senior, he was chosen as the best player in South Dakota. Heupel said, “It seemed like I was always the second or third guy on their list.” Heupel got recruiting calls from major college football teams at the universities of Houston, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.

Going to college

Heupel started playing in college when he went to Weber State University in Ogden, Utah. He didn’t play in any games in 1996 and 1997 because he was a freshman, but he hurt his ACL during spring practice in 1998, which moved him down the team’s depth chart. He went to Snow College in Ephraim, Utah, and beat Fred Salanoa to become the starting quarterback for the team. Even though he played with Salanoa, Heupel threw for 2,308 yards and 28 touchdowns. Later, Utah State offered him a scholarship, but he chose Oklahoma instead after meeting with the Sooners’ new head coach, Bob Stoops.

Heupel was second in the race for the Heisman Trophy in 2000. He was also a Walter Camp Award winner, an All-American, and the AP Player of the Year. Heupel led the Sooners to a perfect season and the national championship by beating Florida State in the Orange Bowl in 2001.

Work as a professional

Heupel was picked up by the Miami Dolphins in the sixth round of the 2001 NFL Draft.

Later, in early 2002, he was signed by the Green Bay Packers, but he was let go a month before training camp. He didn’t try to play football professionally after that.

Coaching is a job

Heupel worked as an assistant coach for Oklahoma in 2004. He did this under head coach Bob Stoops. In 2005, Mike Stoops, Bob’s brother and an assistant coach at Oklahoma when Heupel played there, became the head coach at the University of Arizona. Mike hired Heupel as the tight ends coach.

In 2006, Heupel was hired by Oklahoma to work with the quarterbacks. In that role, he coached Sooners quarterback Sam Bradford, who won the Heisman Trophy in 2008. On December 13, 2010, Heupel and Jay Norvell were named co-offensive coordinators at Oklahoma by head coach Bob Stoops. They replaced Kevin Wilson, who had taken the job of head coach at Indiana. Stoops said that Heupel would be in charge of deciding what plays the offense would run during games. After an 8–5 season that ended with a 40–6 loss to Clemson in the 2014 Russell Athletic Bowl, Heupel’s contract was not renewed in January 2015.

After leaving Oklahoma, Heupel worked for one season as an assistant head coach, offensive coordinator, and quarterback coach for the Utah State Aggies. He then worked for two seasons as offensive coordinator and quarterback coach for the Missouri Tigers.
